- We have an old churn. It is eighteen inches high and it is thirteen inches at the top and bottom. The sides of the churn are round. The churn was made by a cooper in Ballina in 1919. The parts of the churn are the butter-dash, and the spades.
Butter is made three times a week in Summer and twice a week in winter. The churning takes half an hour in summer and an hour in winter. The cream is put into the churn, the churn-dash is moved up and down by hand. A woman usually does the work. If strangers come in during churning they must help, otherwise it is believed the strangers will take away the butter which means that no butter can be made from that milk. If a stranger comes in during churning and does not help, the woman churning will not allow him to go till the butter is made. The stranger always says "God bless the work". If it is a child who comes in he will be told to say "God bless the work"(continues on next page)- Collector
